Canadian Pacific, headquartered in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, operates about 11,000 miles of track in the USA, and thousands more all across Canada. After evaluating the effectiveness of Railroad Chaplains going to families involved in a railroad incident, CP officials, running the USA operation, hired RRC on May 1, 2009. CP became the second Class 1 railroad to join forces with RRC in expressing compassion and love to families in need.

The name, short line railroads, explains their track and hauling distance. Most short line railroads have less than 200 miles of track and hauling distance, with many less road crossings. Even though the potential of railroad incidents is reduced, compared to Class 1 railroads, there are still times when death and critical injuries result from crossing or train incidents, requiring the need for a Railroad Chaplain.
