What We Do

A Chaplain in Tepeji, Mexico spoke with an employee concerning physical abuse from her live-in partner. He helped the employee see various options that would help her situation. She decided on her own to leave her live-in partner and went to live with her parents. She is also receiving assistance from a referral by the chaplain to the local government agency that helps families in need.

A chaplain was called to help a client company employee whose brother had suffered depression for 6 years. It was so bad that he wouldn’t even leave his bed for long periods of time. He went to several doctors and seemed to get better but after a time the depression would return. His last bout with depression was extreme and the family asked the chaplain to help. The chaplain went to visit the family and encouraged them to pray fervently for the young man and ask God for help since they had already tried everything they knew to do in the physical and mental areas. With the chaplain’s help the family bonded together and prayed for their family member. The young man has since returned to studying in the university and is doing well.

An employee had a very complicated problem. She needed to make a decision but didn’t know what to do. The chaplain helped her see different solutions to her problem and told her that God loved her very much. Since that day the employee made her decision and is at peace.

“We have a chaplain program in the company where I work in Puerto Rico and the chaplains are very good. I am proud that our company has the only marketplace chaplain program in Puerto Rico. My local chaplain visited my family member when he was in the hospital. We have a great chaplain who is always available to provide care and comfort for us.”

Tom was on a high. He simply wanted to tell someone about his daughter, but was new to the company, and didn’t want to be seen to be bragging. The chaplain walked past and said ‘Hi, how are you doing today Tom’. Now chaplains were new to Tom. In his 25 years experience of work he’d never come across one, but here was someone he could share the good news with. ‘My daughter’s got a job, and not just a job, but the one she’s trained so hard for’. The chaplain and Tom talked about the job for a moment or two. He just felt better for being able to share this great news with someone in his workplace, and the chaplain said she’d pop by to say ‘Hi’ again, and that she was there for the good times, the difficult times, and for the ordinary times,

Denise was concerned about her Mum who was moving to share her house. They’d talked about it at home a great deal, but still the move, the change, troubled her, and distracted her from her work. She thought she’d see if she could check out things with the employee care team. One of them always called by on Tuesday. Talking to the chaplain she mentioned that Mum had always gone to a lunch club in her home town. The chaplain promised to check out the lunch clubs in the area, phoning Denise at home that evening to give her the information. All the lunch clubs were in a church within a mile or two of home; one of them could collect Mum and bring her home after the lunch club. Six months later Mum was not only enjoying the lunch club but also going along to church a couple of Sundays a month. Denise described herself as feeling much more relaxed about Mum, and being at work, and wrote expressing her thanks for the service of the chaplains.

Dakari had been settled in the UK for nine or ten years. He had been brought up in a Christian family, and church had been part of his culture before he’d moved to England, so he was familiar with Pastors and Ministers, but surprised when his firm contracted with Marketplace Chaplains Europe for a chaplain care team. He had never seen Christian leaders in the workplace before. The business was going through a re-organisation and a number of jobs, including his were being made redundant. When the chaplain came round he asked to talk with him, and met him a couple of times to talk about faith. In the context of those conversations he recommitted his life to Christ, and was introduced by the chaplain to a church, where he began a discipleship course. Although life at work remained tough, it made more sense and Dakari was much happier in himself. He found he looked forward to each day.

When a young female employee of a client company died suddenly during a weekend, the company owner asked the chaplains if they would be available for the employees, many of whom were shocked by the sudden loss. The chaplains arranged their schedule to spend extra time at the company location to visit with any employees who wanted to talk with them. Many of the workers found comfort simply in talking with the chaplains about the untimely death of their friend. The chaplain also provide grief care for the mother of the deceased employee.

An employee was troubled by many issues that were “closing in on him” as he called his situation. These problems included serious personal debt, depression, a romantic relationship gone sour and significant troubles at work. The chaplain had several discussions with the employee to help him put his concerns in perspective and make progress toward systematically working on solutions for each situation.

Jill worked at a factory where they had introduced a chaplain care service. There were two chaplains, a man and a woman. Both were easy to talk to. Within a couple of months she found herself talking about her son Dan, who had been in prison, and used drugs regularly. The chaplains arranged for Dan to visit a Christian drug rehabilitation programme that was residential. Jill couldn’t believe it when Dan agreed to go into the programme. Three months later when the chaplains visited Dan he looked like a different man. He’d put on weight, had energy, and amazingly had become a Christian. Jill had also visited a local church to say thank you for the changes she had begun to see in her son.
